Zachary Begler (b. 1995) is primarily an analogue photographer whose work comments on people, their relationship with place, memories that archives hold, and how experimentation with images can lead to a better understanding of our humanity. Originally from Helena, Montana, he lived in Los Angeles for four years, starting in 2016, to focus on a portraiture project surrounding the housing crisis on Skid Row. This series, A Lens to the Streets, is held in the Holter Museum of Art’s permanent collection in Helena and has been there since 2018. Collaboration, written narrative, and a long-term approach of revisiting the same place and people over a given period are an integral part of his practice, as he believes in giving authority to those he works with. Zach has had four exhibitions, is published in The Experimental Darkroom: Contemporary Uses of Traditional Black & White Photographic Materials, and has given artist talks and guest lectures to high schoolers and college students alike. He moved back to Bozeman in 2020 and completed his Bachelor's of Arts from Montana State University in 2022, where he now teaches undergraduates at the School of Film & Photography.
